Alan's story - The reason we are doing this

The Alan Frederick Schien Memorial golf tournament is just a couple of months away on Sunday, September 3rd at the beautiful Osage National Golf Club.  Leading up to the tournament, we want to share some stories about Alan, so that you can learn a little bit about this wonderful man's life and why Easterseals means so much to us.   We hope to see you at the tournament, and if you would like to sign up a team, donate to Easterseals, or provide a silent auction prize, please go to www.fredheadgolf.com for more information.

Alan Frederick Schien

My Son the Control Freak (from Kent Schien)

So my son was a control freak.  He had  to control his environment.  This is coming from a non-verbal, person with little to no communication skills.  His need to control was deeply rooted in who he was.  If I left my shoes on the floor, Alan would have a cow!  He would point and sometimes howler until someone figured out that Dad had once again left his shoes on the floor.
The house always had to be neat and organized.  If something was out of order, like a office bag was sitting on the couch Alan would let you know.  He kept our house neat as a pin.  Thank you Alan, because you know your Mom and I are basically Pigs!.

Alan, like most children and young adults loved the TV.  From the time he got up in the morning until he went to bed he had to have the TV on.  Sound was optional, but the TV had to be on.  One of his quarks was at night, when it was time for bed the TV in the great room had to be turned off.  It didn’t matter if I was watching an intense basketball game or the world’s greatest movie – that TV had to be turned off before he would voluntarily go to bed.  Even if we had a house full of guests or family…

Not everything that Alan pointed at did we understand what was going on.  Once when we were in Florida two of Alan’s personal care assistance took him shopping.  They returned later that evening and all seemed well with the world.  The next day the five of us were in the car and Alan kept pointing at the roof of the car.  Both girls were entertaining Alan and telling him how silly he was and that was the end of that.  When Alan passed away and we had his memorial, most of Alan’s girls made it to the event to celebrate his life.  Then and only then did we find out what happened that day.  At his memorial all the girls that were present came on to speak about Alan.  Each told a story about funny things that had happened and things that Carol and I never knew about.  Well the day that the girls had taken Alan shopping they had left the car with the sunroof open and as we all know in Florida rain storms  pop up in the afternoon.  Well it did that day and it filled the inside of the with rain.  The cup holders were full and the  interior was soaked.  The girls mopped up what they could and then that evening attempted to dry the  car with towels.  So the next day Alan was trying to tattle on the girls for leaving the sunroof open.

If one of the girls used the shower upstairs because they were going out that night; we would come home to Alan pointing at the staircase.  This was a common occurrence and we became accustomed to this “Alan language” and we were say, “Oh did one of the girls taken a shower upstairs and he would nod and say "Uhuh".
